About Camilla Andrew

Fantasy for readers who like their love stories beautiful, complicated and a little doomed.

Camilla Andrew is a British fantasy author who writes lush, character-driven stories about ambitious women, monstrous men, political power and the uncomfortable truth that love does not always conquer all.

She is the author of The Essence of the Equinox, a completed gothic fantasy trilogy following a star-born princess and the future king of demons across decades of desire, betrayal and political upheaval. Blending gothic romance, gaslamp fantasy and political intrigue, her work is for readers drawn to morally complicated characters, decadent worlds and relationships in which falling in love is only the beginning of the problem.

Her debut novel, When the Stars Alight, won Most Interesting Fictional World and Unforgettable Cover Art at the 2024 Indieverse Awards. Her work has found readers around the world, both online and at book fairs, conventions and literary events.

At the heart of Camilla’s fiction are women with desires of their own. Her heroines are allowed to be ambitious, angry, sensual, selfish, loving, difficult and occasionally spectacularly wrong. Romance may transform them, but it does not require them to surrender themselves in exchange for being loved. Likewise, the monsters in Camilla’s stories are not necessarily waiting for the right woman to fix them. Sometimes two people can love each other desperately and still be catastrophically wrong for one another.

Camilla is particularly interested in the places where romance collides with power: the compromises people make for love, the identities women are expected to sacrifice for it, and what happens when desire cannot resolve the political, moral or personal differences between two people.

She also has a longstanding weakness for beautiful villains. This has caused problems.

An Inkwell of Nectar

Camilla began independently publishing her fiction through An Inkwell of Nectar, which has since grown into the home of her books, special editions and other creations. She has sold thousands of books directly to readers and is particularly fond of meeting them at conventions and book events, where she can usually be found surrounded by an unreasonable quantity of sprayed edges.

In 2025, Camilla was selected as one of ten writers for Hachette UK’s THRIVE: Grow Your Story programme, where she developed her literary psychological thriller, Echo Chamber, with support from publishing-industry mentors.

Alongside fiction, she writes essays about literature, femininity, relationships, culture and the peculiar experience of being a woman on the internet. When she isn’t writing, Camilla can usually be found reading, drinking tea, wandering around somewhere prettier than necessary, lifting surprisingly heavy things at the gym, or finding yet another beautiful object she absolutely did not need.

She lives in London, where she continues to write stories about women with sharp edges and the people foolish enough to underestimate them.
